iD 2008: Gedo, Jado & Devitt Confirmed

Posted by Phil Jones

Indypendence Day Weekend 2008

NJPW Wrestlers Announced

The first three participants from New Japan Pro Wrestling have been named. They are the legendary tag-team of Gedo & Jado, and the incredible talent that is Prince Devitt.

More news will follow soon on the others names, but for those who are not familiar with the roster at NJPW a brief history of the announced names is given below.

Gedo & Jado

Gedo & Jado started in TPG (Takeshi Puroresu Gundan), an army in New Japan, where they were young dojo boys in training. They debuted in Amsterdam, Holland, in March 1989. The two participated in the debut of Gran Hamada's UWF promotion, before moving to W*ING, where they competed in some dangerous concept matches. They switched to Genichiro Tenryu's WAR in February 1994, where they became closely associated with the late Hiromichi "Kodo" Fuyuki. The three dominated WAR's active six-man tag scene, enjoying multiple title reigns. Gedo became one of WAR's top juniors, feuding with Ultimo Dragon, Lionheart (Chris Jericho), and others. He made a big name for himself in both the 1994 Super J Cup, where he reached the semi-final round, and more so the 1995 Super J Cup, where he reached the final, where he lost by a narrow margin to Jushin Thunder Liger. Jado & Gedo followed Fuyuki to FMW, which they made their main battlefield from February 1997. They obtained further success in FMW, with more title reigns and membership in the controversial Team No Respect army. In early 2001, on the heels of financial trouble in FMW, and became avid freelancers on the independent circuit. The punks invaded New Japan in June 2001, assisting Team 2000 in an attack on the New Japan army, and unmasking Jushin Thunder Liger in the process. They quickly captured the IWGP JR. Tag Team Title, and would dominate that throne for close to a year, breaking the record for most defences. At the Tokyo Dome in October 2003, Jado shocked everyone by winning the IWGP JR. Heavyweight Title in a Super JR. Rumble. A big fan of classic American wrestling, Jado utilises an aggressive brawling style, inspired by one of his childhood idols, Stan Hansen, whilst Gedo is a snarling brawler with a bad attitude, who will use any means necessary to defeat his opponents.

Fergal Devitt

Growing up, Fergal Devitt played soccer and Gaelic football, but always had a dream to become a pro wrestler. He achieved this dream when he debuted for NWA UK Hammerlock in 2000 at a young age. In November 2005, he was initiated into New Japan's L.A. Dojo, where he continued to study pro wrestling. After impressing, he was invited to train in New Japan's main dojo in Japan, where in early 2006, he began the intense Japanese training style. In April 2006, he made his New Japan debut against El Samurai, becoming the first foreign wrestler in many years to graduate from New Japan's world famous dojo. Although still very young, Devitt has made remarkably quick progress and has won comparisons to another New Japan foreign dojo graduate, Chris Benoit, and is one to keep both eyes on in the coming years.

Best in the World

Following this weeks huge announcement of the inclusion of NJPW we thought why not follow this up with another massive declaration.
